Artcast Digital, society of audiovisual realization and production, based in Annecy, celebrates 10 years of existence in a highly clinical way.
Indeed, last May 8 at the International Congress of foot surgery, organized by the Scientific Committee of GRECMIP (research group and study on the minimally-invasive surgery of foot and ankle) asked Artcast to perform the retransmission of 13 surgical operations in one day!
The delicate interventions on the pathologies of the foot, were filmed and broadcast live from the recent sports clinic Médipôle - Garonne located in Toulouse to the "Bibliotheque Nationale de France" in Paris, where a specialized audience sat in conference.
On this occasion, the technical crew of the broadcasting company built 3 operating rooms in authentic high-tech studios. A complex set of facilities, designed and implemented within very demanding compliances and requirements of medical protocol. With extensive and sharp experience in the field of live surgery (perfect knowledge of the concepts of asepsis, discretion with respect to the surgical staff), Artcast has responded fully and appropriately to the expectations of the surgeons involved.
In order to provide the highest quality, uptake, transmission and diffusion of images, and the satellite link, were made in high definition.
Each room, "theatre of operations":, was equipped with 2 HD cameras, a HD endoscopic camera and an image intensifier. And return materials (images & Audio).Specifically Interactive: event has a real exchange between the surgical teams and the audience of the BNF (doctors, students and the representatives of laboratories).
The complete recordings converged on a video mixer "HD broadcast" able to receive and mix a couple of video sources before the live broadcast.
The study, design, installation and implementation were carried from out A to Z by the society of Annecy, which positions itself with this outstanding operation, as "audiovisual champion of live surgery!"
The complete study required several weeks of preparation before installation in Toulouse and Paris.
Beyond the strictly technical aspects, Artcast Digital has also directed the video presentation of the congress, a film presentation on medical patients, and is currently editing the report of the event.
Each year the Arthrex company organizes an event for medical specialists to perform complex operations in arthroscopic surgery of the lower and upper limb (shoulder, knee, hip, foot, hand) broadcast live to share their experiences, discuss several cases and present the latest innovations in the surgical environment.
This 6th edition of Arthrolive took place over two days, September 30 and October 1, 2010, in the Ambroise Paré hospital in Boulogne Billancourt, near Paris.
On this occasion Arthrex requested Artcast Medical to the capturing on video of the 10 surgical interventions, the broadcasts and high definition projection in the conference room, allowing a real interaction between the surgical teams and the audience.
Optic fiber links had to be deployed to transport the four high-definition streams to conference rooms. Innovative and advanced techniques have been the topic of discussion among various stakeholders. Under the chairmanship of Professor Philippe Hardy, the quality level obtained at the height of the event was a real success!
Artcast was also asked to produce medical films from the Live Surgery.
Under the chairmanship of:
Pr Ph. Hardy, Hôpital Ambroise Paré - Boulogne Bilancourt
Avec la participation :
Dr T. Bauer, Dr V. Beauthier, Dr N. Billot, Dr X. Delpit, Dr B. Levy, Dr N. Solignac, Dr F. Welby

Dr B. Toussaint, Clinique Générale d'Annecy - Annecy
On 14 and 15 April was held the Arthrolive (meetings and experience sharing of arthroscopic shoulder surgeons) at the Hôpital privé de l'Estuaire du Havre.
Regarding rotator cuff repair and acromioclavicular disjunction under Dr. Courage's direction, broadcasted workshops on dry bones allowed the testing of innovative techniques and instrumentation offered by the Arthrex company.
A live surgery day (live broadcast from an operating room) followed with the participation of Professor Philippe Hardy (Hôpital Ambroise Paré) and Dr. Francois Bruchou (Hôpital privé de l'Ouest Parisien).
Through live images, the three interventions led to direct analysis and discussion about repair of the rotator cuff, biceps tenodesis and bankart.
Artcast Medical, with an 8 years experience in surgical capture and transmission was selected to perform all services and audiovisual techniques.
Especially focused on the captured images quality, high definition video was transmitted over optical fiber in the conference room where the audience was held.
Installation was set discreetly without disturbing the hospital overall operating program and in strict compliance with asepsis rules.
The post-production studio also managed the interventions' editing, available on Arthrex company WebTV.
Skill level, experience and technological equipment provide today to the company a national and international influence with the signing of contracts in Europe and North America.
Having been a pioneer of high definition filming in the live surgery field, Artcast creates again the initiative by being the instigator of an unprecedented event at the international level:
May 6 2011, for the first time in the World at an orthopedic congress, 3D HD technology has been used for a multi-camera live broadcast of a knee prosthesis.
We asked Dr. P. Schifrine, referring surgeon involved in vocational training at international level in the field of prosthetic hip and knee, and his associate Dr. T. De Polignac, with the support of the Depuy laboratory (Johnson & Johnson) and live coverage of the operation was transmittedfrom the operating room at the Clinique Générale d'Annecy to the Imperial Palace congress room: an exceptional place for a spectacular course.
In the operating room, Artcast video crews workedto film, utilising multicameras, an open knee surgical operation, all with 3D specific materials and under full compliance with operating and asceptic rules. Motorized heads allowed us to control our cameras placed prudently and with care , which provided exceptional quality pictures.
One major constraint was to ensure a secure and reliable transmission between the two sites which were 2 km apart, the two High Definition beams had to be synchronized to the frame.
The technical solution capabilities from this filming have far exceeded the necessary requirements of the project and suggest new exciting possibilities.
In the congress viewing room, the premium full HD projection system installed, coupled with a giant specific screen of 24m2 placed the audience of 150 people, equipped with 3D, glasses in total immersion comparable to the cozy atmosphere of a movie theater.
Beyond the technological prowess and spectacular effect, the HD quality of 3D images made it undisputed that, with optimal treatment and a transmission system providing high bandwidth, the event was totally succesful.
This quality is guaranteed by the components’ homogeneity of the 3D broadcast workflow, the result of recent investment of 250,000 € in this field.
All technical requirements were met and study research, uptake, transmission and diffusion were provided in their entirety by the internal team of Artcast Medical. With our proven highly technical expertise, the company has already signed new contracts in Europe and overseas.
The success of this operation is linked to the synergy and partnership between surgeons and technical teams: the numerous optimization and simulation tests made before the event in real conditions confirmed the reliability of the chosen system after a year of study.
Feedback from the organizing laboratory and participants confirmed that 3D filming and live coverage of the operation brought a real improvement to training.
The contribution of the extra dimension allows us to appreciate the instrumentation and the surgical movement, thus opening a window for viewers to the reality of the operating room, without having to be actually present in the the operating theatre, a step was made towards a new generation of Live Surgery.
Always willing to go forward, Artcast is already working on new technology concepts to enhance medical education, and applies the experience gained during this event in the field of spine, hip and ankle operations. Tests made in collaboration with Dr. B. Toussaint on shoulder surgery offer exceptionnal results, predicting surprising upcoming congresses.
An exciting future that will be continued...
With its reputation in the field of live surgery, especially in 3D, Artcast Medical was again called by DePuy laboratories to ensure the realization of the first support training of spine surgery in 3D. The Annecy company worked indeed with the world giant of orthopedics and neuroscience at the May 2011 congress of Clinique Générale d’Annecy, which had held the first 3D orthopedic live surgery.
This time Artcast moved to Bristol (UK) to film a spine operation performed by Dr. Hutchinson on September 8, 2011. Three 3D cameras were used to ensure the best viewing angle throughout the procedure. After a careful post-production of images in constant communication with the Depuy Spine laboratory to ensure compliance with the educational expectations, the film was delivered in BluRay as well as 3D anaglyph.
Brodcasted at the 2011 Eurospine show (October 19 to 21 in Milan) on a 3D screen, the video has been received with enthusiasm, and quality of high definition images helped to ensure maximum understanding of the operation.
True European collaboration, the project has taken an international dimension to its broadcasting throughout the world: USA, Russia, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland...
